Intellectual property (IP) rights are the backbone of progress and innovation, bestowing upon creators the exclusive rights to create, market, or disseminate their works, providing the impetus to reap the rewards of their efforts, and affording them the means to advance even more inventive and creative pursuits.
Attorney General Dato Seri Paduka Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa said this at the World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD) 2023 event at the Songket Ballroom of The Rizqun International Hotel yesterday.
The attorney general, who is also the Registrar of Trademarks, Patents and Industrial Designs, officiated the event.
“IP is more than a legal construct. When used strategically, it can be a powerful catalyst that fuels innovation, attracts investments, and bolsters economic growth,” he said.
“Themed ‘Woman and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity’, this year’s WIPD resonates with the evolving landscape of our world.
“Women are not only rising as pioneers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics but also driving creative industries, such as music, literature, design, media, and film, showcasing a wealth of talent and potential that deserves recognition.
“This theme affirms female participation in the world and with increasing contributions to the various scientific and creative industries, it is vital to encourage women to use the IP system to add value to their work.”
He added, “The Brunei Darussalam Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO) has been raising awareness about IP rights among women and supports them providing advisory services to small businesses run by women.”
Dato Seri Paduka Haji Ahmad spoke about the achievements of two women who have made significant strides in the Sultanate.
Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Time Corporation, Sarinah Ziziumiza is the leader behind Rumine Corporation, a tech software startup specialising in immersive technologies.
“She is also an engineering educator and an educational technology researcher who has created an educational environment that leverages innovative technologies to prepare us for the future,” Dato Haji Ahmad added.
He also mentioned Co-Founder and CEO of Memori, a one-stop online platform that provides affordable and accessible legacy planning solutions for humans and pets, Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee, whose “innovative approach has not only created a unique service but has also garnered a remarkable list of awards and recognitions”.
He added, “The exceptional journey taken by both women is a testament of their determination and innovative thinking.
“Their stories bring to life the limitless potential of women in the pursuit of innovation and progress.”
The event saw a forum led by female innovators, entrepreneurs and creatives from organisations including BruIPO, Universiti Teknologi Brunei, Mahakarya of the Arts Asia Institute and Tyne Solutions Sdn Bhd who discussed technology, innovation, and the role of IP.
