Int’l day against drugs observed with brisk walk

Despite a sudden heavy shower Wednesday evening, personnel of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) remained undeterred as they carried on with a night brisk walk event at the Eco-Corridor, Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas in the capital, in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT).

Donning green light LED wristbands to signify the event, the brisk walk was graced by Acting NCB Director Awang Zainal Adi bin Haji Jamain as the guest of honour.

Under the theme “Empowering a Future Community without Drugs,” this year’s celebration emphasises community awareness and support for NCB’s efforts in eradicating drugs in the country.

The event coincides with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izaddin Waddaulah ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah during the 31st National Day celebration, where His Majesty highlighted drug abuse as a threat to peace and security. His Majesty called for unified efforts among government agencies, the public, parents, schools, NGOs, and grassroots leaders to combat this issue.

NCB aims to enhance public knowledge and awareness in tackling drug abuse and trafficking issues in Brunei.

June 26 is globally recognised as IDADAIT, declared by the United Nations General Assembly on December 7, 1987, with the goal of strengthening international cooperation towards a drug-free world. – LYNA MOHAMMAD
