Innovative women recognised at awards ceremony

The World Intellectual Property Day 2023 event yesterday saw the presentation of Recognition Award to seven recipients.

The recipients were Dr Hajah Asmah binti Haji Hussaini and Dr Malai Haniti binti Sheikh Abdul Hamid from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD); Dr Sharina binti Haji Yunus Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB); Nur Almira Ufairah binti Salim and Siti Majidah binti Rahim from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali; Hajah Hanipah binti Haji Apong from Politeknik Brunei (PB), and Sarinah binti Ziziumiza from Institute of Brunei Technical Education.

Dr Hajah Asmah lead a team that won first place at the Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2019 for a mobile solution that digitises loyalty and membership cards to provide convenience to consumers and enhanced data analytics.

She has also represented Brunei Darussalam at the Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards and participated in the Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) Award.

Dr Malai Haniti has filed a patent in the Sultanate on an invention to produce green electricity from plants, which has showcased at UBD Convocation Festival, UBD Innovation Wharf, and InnovFest China 2023.

Dr Sharina serves as the deputy director at UTB’s Enterprise Office, focusing on intellectual property (IP) and commercialisation policies. She also chairs the National Nanotechnology Committee.

Her projects include a river-cleaning robot with artificial intelligence, automated vertical farms, and a solar-powered desalination system, while her work extends to floating solar panels, wireless soft robotics control, and an autonomous hospital delivery robot.

PhD student Nur Almira Ufairah has spearheaded the development of the FITMe project, which is at the intersection of technology and fitness, with a focus on augmented reality and virtual reality technology.

The project highlights the considerable potential of intellectual property (IP) in the fitness industry.

Siti Majidah has achieved notable success in international innovation competitions, including a Silver Award for her project ‘Exploring the Path to Sustainable E-Waste Recycling’ at INNOCOM VI 2023, a Special Award and Gold Award for ‘Ehtaj Halal Organic Fertiliser’ at the International Halal Science Innovation Competition 2023, and a Gold Award with the Best Extended Abstract for the prototype ‘Ehtaj Home Kitchen Composter Device Produce Halal Eco’.

Hajah Hanipah led the development of the PB Admission System (PBAS), streamlining the data entry during admissions and saving costs for the institution. She also anticipated the growing need for support for students with diverse learning needs and established the Academic Support Services Initiatives for Student and Staff in 2020.

The initiative supports students with conditions such as autism and dyslexia, enhancing their academic and social participation.

Sarinah developed Innoverse, a cutting-edge educational metaverse technology designed for technical and vocational education and training, connecting educators, students, and industry experts in a virtual space, fostering immersive learning experiences.

Key contents include interactive simulations, real-world skill applications, industry-specific training modules, and networking opportunities. Innoverse was showcased during this year’s Teacher’s Day celebration at the International Convention Centre and presented in the BICTA. – Lyna Mohamad
