Inmates to gain basic digital literacy

A ceremony to handover a digital literacy project by Ta’allum Team comprising six officers in the Executive Development Programme for Middle Management Officers (EDPMMO) Cohort 35 was held at the Prisons Department’s training centre in Tutong District yesterday.

Director of the Civil Service Institute Dr Hajah Noor Maya binti Haji Md Salleh and Acting Director of Prisons Bahrin bin Haji Mohammad Yassin were present at the event with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prisons Department and Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE). The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by a speech from Ta’allum Team leader Pengiran Mahdini bin Pengiran Haji Ali. It continued with the handover of the project to the Prisons Department.

The project, as part of the team’s community outreach programme module, included computer equipment for inmates’ digital learning sessions. The project will provide basic digital literacy courses at Maraburong Prison to support Brunei Vision 2035 by fostering educated and highly-skilled people by providing lifelong learning opportunities and access to education for inmates.

The inmates will learn Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint allowing them to gain essential digital skills valuable for finding employment or generating income in the future.

It is hoped that the new knowledge will be a stepping stone for a better life and seamless reintegration back into society and improve their personal development. – Lyna Mohamad
