Initiative promotes menstrual health awareness

PINK Project recently launched ‘PINK Awareness: Let’s Talk!’, an initiative aimed at enhancing menstrual health awareness and hygiene management across communities in the Sultanate.

In a collaborative effort with the Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD)-SDG Sustainability Youth Award Project Team and Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Masters of Management students, PINK Project aims to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and foster partnerships to tackle menstrual health challenges effectively.

Acting Head of Health Promotion Centre (HPC) Dr Ernina Nisdzarinah binti Haji Abdul Rani and Project Manager of PINK Project Naizatul Hakimah binti Abdullmalek attended the launch.

Dr Hajah Norreffaerainie binti Haji Emran from the Ministry of Health delivered the opening keynote speech, initiating discussion on menstrual health and hygiene. Representatives of Green Brunei, Masters of Management students, committees and volunteers attended the opening ceremony.

The initiative, supported by key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Secretariat Brunei, BIBD, UBD School of Business and Economics, HPC, and Bleed Safely, embodies a holistic approach to menstrual health advocacy.

It aims to ensure access to menstrual products, deliver comprehensive menstrual hygiene education, and advocate sustainable solutions to address the affordability of sanitary pads in schools and underprivileged communities.

The event featured panel discussions, led by speakers including Trish Lai of Kaimana Living, Kamaliah @ Norjannah binti Kamalrulzaman of Projek FEED, Siti Zaimah Roslan of Bleed Safely and Dr Khadizah binti Haji Abdul Mumin of UBD Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences.

Meanwhile, insights from female athletes Anisah Najihah and Liyana Sidek underscored the importance of managing menstruation in sports.

Attendees also participated in various workshops, including a pilates class by Embrace Pilates and creative expression through batik canvas and cupcake decoration, facilitated by Whyte Studio.

‘PINK Awareness: Let’s Talk!’ signifies the power of collaboration and community engagement in advancing menstrual health and hygiene.

By promoting education, breaking barriers, and fostering inclusivity, PINK Project endeavours to create an informed and supportive environment for menstrual health in Brunei and beyond.
