Indonesia’s exports not heavily reliant on US market, says minister

JAKARTA (XINHUA) – The shipments of Indonesian products overseas do not depend heavily on the United States (US) market, as the value of exports to the country is relatively small, a senior minister said here.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that China is currently Indonesia’s top export destination.

The minister emphasised that Indonesia’s overseas shipments are not entirely reliant on a single export destination. He noted that the value of Indonesia’s exports to the US accounts for only 2.2 per cent of gross domestic product.

In terms of scale, Airlangga said that the US market contributes just 17 per cent of Indonesia’s total trade value. He added that the government is working to boost trade with countries beyond the US.

“Trade with other countries, which contributes 83 per cent of our total trade value, represents a significant opportunity. The US market only contributes 17 per cent,” he said at an event.

As part of its effort to broaden market access beyond the US, Airlangga said the Indonesian government is actively pursuing a number of international trade agreements and initiatives.
