India’s independence celebrated

The Bandar Seri Begawan Indian Association (BSBIA) hosted a cultural programme at Bridex in Jerudong yesterday evening to celebrate India’s 78th Independence Day.

Some 650 members of the Indian community attended.

The event began with the singing of the national anthems of Brunei and India.

Organising committee chairman M Bharathidasan delivered a welcoming speech, highlighting the significance of independence day and the importance of such celebrations.

BSBIA President N Murugesan expressed gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni

Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Brunei Government for their support in allowing the Indian community to organise activities in the Sultanate.

The event proceeded with an address by Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Alok Amitabh Dimri, who extended warm greetings and commended the association for its dedication to social services and promoting the Indian culture in the Sultanate.
