Incorporate tawakkal amid uncertainty, Muslims told

Rokiah Mahmud

Muslims should incorporate tawakkal when facing uncertainties, through Tazkiyah an-Nafs counselling, said board member of Malaysia Counsellor of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry Dato Professor Emeritus Dr Amir bin Awang yesterday.

He said this at the National Counselling Conference and Exhibition (NICHE) 2022 organised by the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) and the Brunei Darussalam Counselling Association (PERKAB), themed ‘Divine Vaccine Overcoming Uncertainty’.

In his keynote address on ‘Divine Vaccine Overcoming Uncertainty: Tazkiyah An-Nafs’, he differentiated between Western counselling and an-Nafs, by noting that the Islamic method can be regarded as a divine vaccine. He added that Muslims must seek to purify their souls as an element to the divine vaccine approach.

The second keynote speech was delivered by PERKAB President Major (Rtd) Rusli bin Bujang, who covered ‘Strategy in Improving Taqwa (Pious) in Creating Inner Self-Control’.

He said that a person’s ability to refrain themselves from doing something unintended or unwanted can help the person achieve the desired long-term goals.

The conference continued with parallel presentations at Tarbiyah Hall and Taklim Hall, themed ‘Technology, Measurement and Assessment in Counselling’.

The Tarbiyah Hall featured three presenters – Gamal Abdul Nasir Zakaria from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on ‘Addressing Mental Health Among Students Post-COVID-19 Pandemic in Brunei Darussalam’; Dr Kharhan bin Haji Jait and Ahmad Humaizi bin Haji Samihon from KUPU SB on ‘Online Counselling Education Service in Brunei Darussalam’; and Counselling Officer from Student Affairs Division at UBD Akmal Nasri bin Kamal on ‘The Physiological Impacts of Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) on Social Skills: Mediating Effects of Mental Health Problems’.
