The Bangladesh community in the Sultanate commemorated the March 7 Speech Day of Father of Nation of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the High Commission of Bangladesh in Brunei Darussalam yesterday.
High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona hoisted the flag, followed by the recitation of Al-Quran verses before reading the messages from Bangladesh’s President and Prime Minister on the historic March 7 Speech Day.
The high commissioner said that with hard work and a visionary leadership, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been transforming Bangladesh into a Golden Bengal – the long-cherished dream of Bangabandhu.
Bangladesh’s Father of the Nation led the people of Bangladesh to independence in 1971 and delivered a speech at Ramna Race Course, Dhaka, on March 7, 1971, she added.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognised the speech as part of the World’s Documentary Heritage, and it has been included in the Memory of the World International Register – a list of the world’s important documentary heritage.
The high commissioner also hosted a virtual session with former state minister of Liberation War Affairs Ministry Captain AB Tajul Islam who fought in the 1971 war.
