Legislative Council (LegCo) members called for efforts to be made to improve the quality of life in the country during yesterday’s 19th LegCo session.

LegCo member Yang Berhormat Haji Mohammad Danial @ Tekpin bin Ya’akub said it is important to improve the quality of life for the people by providing quality infrastructure, including housing, health, information and communication and electricity.

He added that marginalised remote areas also need to be given focus.

“Up to now, there are still families who have not been able to fully benefit from the facilities provided by the government,” he said.

Meanwhile, LegCo member Yang Berhormat Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Nasir highlighted that assisting micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to increase their productivity and helping workers to upgrade their skills can boost economic recovery and improve the standard of living, which will support Brunei Vision 2035 goals.

Yang Berhormat Haji Sulaiman also hoped that the government can implement various initiatives in addressing inflation, so that it would ease the burden on families.

The LegCo member called for the government to take steps to tighten enforcement of laws through ensuring ethical business practices and measures against price gouging, which can lead to an increase in the prices of goods and services.

WHOLE-OF-NATION

LegCo member Yang Berhormat Salleh bin Haji Othman emphasised that all parties, including government-linked companies and investment groups play a part in ensuring active economic development and protecting the welfare of the people.

“Such involvement is not limited to initiatives on welfare, community development, and entrepreneurship, but also other efforts such as updating terms of the temporary occupation licences (TOL) for land.

“This also includes the continued provision of the National Housing Scheme (RPN), which helps to realise the people’s dream of owning a home,” he said.

The LegCo member urged the cultivation of good governance, by assisting the people to manage their finances effectively, to be more prudent, and enabling them to focus their spending on more essential matters as part of the effort to control inflation.

He hoped the budget could be managed as well as possible, particularly on matters pertaining to the National Welfare Scheme (SKN).

Meanwhile, human resources and development programmes for science, technology and skills need to be enriched, particularly among entrepreneurs and the new generation, he said.
