Imprisonment, fine for assault, weapon possession

Mohd Saifulrizal bin Abdullah was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment with three strokes of the cane for weapon possession and fined BND2,000 for assault.

Failure to settle the fine will result in additional two months in jail.

He was also ordered to pay the victim BND200 or face another week in jail.

The case was presided over by Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid and prosecuted by Nurul Husna binti Abidin.

Saifulrizal, 43, assaulted a security personnel at a company in Kuala Belait after a verbal altercation on December 11, 2023.

The defendant was upset after being accused of theft. He later returned to the scene where the exchange took place with his wife, picked up a sledgehammer and confronted the victim, striking him twice in the forehead.

Police investigations led to Saifulrizal’s arrest. The man confessed to the assault and admitted to intimidating the victim with a sledgehammer. Medical examination confirmed the victim’s injuries were due to the assault.

Saifulrizal’s previous convictions relating to property offences in 2002 were taken into consideration during sentencing. – Fadley Faisal
