Imams across Brunei Darussalam cautioned worshippers about the perils of Istidraj, emphasising that blessings received by those negligent toward Allah the Almighty may not signify rewards but rather, tests in disguise.
The sermon delivered on Friday highlighted that Istidraj encompasses blessings such as wealth, health and status, which may appear to signal happiness but can actually act as traps.
Even amidst declining faith and negligence in worship, these blessings persist, potentially steering individuals further from the path of righteousness.
“These gifts and bestowals from Allah the Almighty are often misinterpreted, leading some to become arrogant and neglectful of His commands and prohibitions.
“Remember, when people forget Allah the Almighty and disregard His commands, prohibitions, and reminders, He may open the door of Istidraj for them,” explained the Imams.
Imams then outlined several characteristics of Istidraj based on Islamic teachings: worldly favours continue to grow even as one’s faith wanes; sustenance increases despite failing to meet religious obligations; a peaceful and successful life may be experienced despite ongoing immoral behaviour; and health remains intact even when consuming non-halal food.
The sermon then urged the Muslim community to take proactive measures against the potential traps of Istidraj. Key recommendations included strengthening faith in Allah the Almighty, engaging in good deeds, and consistently supplicating for protection against this hidden danger.
Worshippers were then reminded that blessings from Allah the Almighty should be perceived as both gifts and tests, and that neglecting religious duties while enjoying worldly success could ultimately lead to spiritual decline.
The sermon concluded with a call for the community to bolster their faith and devotion to Allah SWT to avoid being misled by the deceit of Istidraj. – Fadley Faisal
