In today’s Friday sermon, the significance of mosques as places beloved by Allah the Almighty was underscored, highlighting their central role in Islamic worship and community life.
Mosques are not merely structures for congregational prayers but also serve as centers for education, social engagement, and unity among Muslims. The sermon referenced Surah At-Tawbah, verse 18, which outlines the attributes of those who maintain and frequent mosques: they are believers in Allah the Almighty and the Last Day, establish prayer, pay zakat, and fear none but Allah the Almighty.
The sermon emphasised that frequenting mosques for prayer, learning, and community activities symbolises true faith and piety. Furthermore, mosques play a pivotal role as hubs of knowledge, where religious and worldly sciences are taught, fostering moral character and societal harmony.
The importance of involving youth in mosque activities was stressed. By encouraging their participation, a generation of upright, dedicated, and community-oriented individuals can be nurtured. The sermon urged the congregation to support programs that attract young people to the mosque, ensuring its role as a vibrant community hub.
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) set an example in maintaining mosque cleanliness, even personally removing dirt to ensure the sanctity of the space. A notable story of Umm Mihjan, a woman who diligently cleaned the mosque during the Prophet’s time, was shared, highlighting her dedication and the honor the Prophet bestowed upon her posthumously. This story served as a reminder of the rewards and blessings associated with caring for mosques.
The congregation was encouraged to contribute towards the construction and upkeep of mosques, as such acts are forms of ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah). It was mentioned that the Brunei Government has established a special National Mosque Building Fund, including an SMS donation platform and other online services, to facilitate contributions. Donations will be utilised for building and maintaining mosques, ensuring their sustainability for future generations.
In conclusion, the sermon called on Muslims to embrace the noble duty of supporting mosques, whether through physical upkeep, financial contributions, or active participation in mosque programs. By doing so, they align themselves with the promise of Allah the Almighty’s blessings and mercy. – Hakim Hayat
