Hundreds compete in hour-long bike race

Laurel Lauridsen Adrian placed first in the open category of the One Hour Criterium Cycling Race after completing 30 laps, followed closely by Amiruddin bin Haji Mohd Amir and Md Azwar bin Mohd Hairolrani in second and third places.

Hundreds of cyclists from across the nation and beyond gathered yesterday at the Belait District Office which served as a starting and finishing point for the race.

The cyclists competed to see who could complete the most laps within the one-hour allocated time during the race that took them on a 1.4-kilometre loop starting along Jalan McKerron and turning onto Jalan Maulana before making their way back to the starting point through Jalan Sultan and Jalan Padang.

The 31-39 age category saw Iskandar Damaimi placed first after completing 30 laps, with Bakar bin Wahab and Dzul bin Husni in second and third places.

Meanwhile, the 40-49 age category saw a close finish with Silas Michael Martin in first place, followed by Shukeri bin Kaderi and Halid bin Sata in second and third after completing 29 laps.

Lastly, placing first in the 50 years and above category was Shanon Basman who completed 29 laps, with Azlan bin Ahamat and Md Halelo bin Awang in second and third places after completing 27 laps.

Acting Belait District Officer Haji Amirol Hafidzin bin Haji Muhammad presented trophies and prizes to the top three cyclists of each category.

Organised by the Pekan Kuala Belait Village Consultative Council (MPK), the race was hosted in collaboration with the Health Promotion Centre (HPC), Belait District Office, and Belait Cycling Club to foster relations among cyclists.

The MPK Pekan Kuala Belait noted that the race was the first of its kind in the Belait District and hoped that similar races will be held in the future to bring together cyclists who share the same passion as they compete in friendly competition to test their abilities and limits.

A booth was also set up by the HPC, Gleneagles JPMC, under their Happy Environment and Lifestyle (HEAL) programme showcasing the health impact and danger of tobacco and e-cigarettes. – Daniel Lim
