TOKYO (Bernama-Xinhua) – The total number of overnight stays at hotels and inns across Japan reached an estimated 55.82 million in December 2024, marking a 6.3-per cent increase from the same month the previous year, data from Japan Tourism Agency showed, reported Xinhua.
The figure marked the highest ever recorded for December.
In breakdown, foreign visitor stays totalled 15.29 million, a 21.9-per cent surge from the previous year, making it the second-highest monthly figure on record.
Domestic stays by Japanese travellers reached 40.53 million, up 1.4 per cent from the previous year.
The agency attributed the surge to rising travel demand, with more foreign tourists visiting Japan during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.
