The Law Enforcement Division of the Labour Department Belait District Branch uncovered two offences under the Employment Order 2009 during operation Operasi Siaga in Jalan Sungai Pandan 7 recently.
The offences were failing to provide first aid equipment and violating the terms of the foreign worker license, where an employee with the position of labourer carried out the job of a cashier. Meanwhile, authorities also found violations during an operation at a retail store in the Tutong commercial complex area.
Five offences under the Employment Order 2009 had been committed. They were the employer failing to pay overtime, making unauthorised deduction of workers’ wages, failing to grant leave on a gazetted public holiday, for failing to provide sick leave certified by a medical practitioner and violating the conditions of a foreign employment license where a foreign worker who is a shop labourer was found working as a meat cutter.
The employers, if found guilty, may each be subjected to a fine of up to BND1,000 for each offence. Failure to pay the fine will result in the employers being produced in court.
The Labour Department reminded employers to always monitor the workers’ welfare in accordance with the requirements set by the Employment Order 2009. – Azlan Othman
