The setting up of a resource collection room is a value-added step to developing the facilitation of reference and studies services at the Brunei History Centre (PSB), particularly on the history and monarchy system in the Sultanate, said PSB Principal Dr Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong.
He said this during the launch of the Brunei History Centre as the Centre of Excellence for the History and Sultanate of Brunei and Resource Collection Room of Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Honorary Professor Dr Haji Awang Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri yesterday.
The ceremony, held at the Borneo Research Centre (penBorneo) in Anggerek Desa, was officiated by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad.
Dr Muhammad Hadi said, “The room has 3,427 items in his collection, including personal reference materials by former PSB principal Pehin Dato Seri Utama Honorary Professor Dr Haji Awang Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri, magazines, articles, manuscripts, documents, newspaper cuttings, files, records, and religious books.
“The late Pehin used the personal collection in producing his studies and research in the country’s culture, tradition, history and monarchy. They serve as valuable knowledge,” said the principal in hoping of getting the community acquainted with the nation’s history.
“It is also hoped to be a source of inspiration for the younger generations to continue his legacy of preserving the country’s history and monarchy system,” said the principal.
The new room aims to provide undergraduates and history researchers with references. The launch of the Centre of Excellence for the History and Sultanate of Brunei is in line with PSB’s initiatives under its Plan of Action 2021-2024 which also align with the Strategic Plan 2020-2024 of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
