His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will leave for New York City, United States from September 21-24 to attend the Summit of the Future, and the General Debate of the 79th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
Themed ‘Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’, the summit will bring together world leaders to enhance cooperation and address both current and emerging global challenges, as well as provide the opportunity to rebuild trust in the multilateral system towards shaping a better future for all peoples. It will also reaffirm existing commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Charter.
While in New York City, His Majesty will attend a reception to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Brunei Darussalam’s membership to the UN.
The Sultanate joined the UN as its 159th member at the 39th Session of the UN General Assembly on September 21, 1984. Its membership in the UN has provided Brunei Darussalam, as a small state, the opportunity to play a role in the international arena. Through its active participation in UN meetings, mandatory and voluntary contributions, and the involvement of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces in UN peacekeeping operations, the Sultanate also contributes to international peace and security, as well as to global prosperity and stability.
