His Majesty to attend ASEAN-US Special Summit

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will attend the ASEAN-United States (US) Special Summit, which will be held on May 12 – 13 in Washington DC.

The Special Summit will be co-chaired by US President Joseph Biden and Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen as Chairman of ASEAN.

During the summit, ASEAN-US leaders are expected to discuss strengthening partnership between ASEAN and the US, as well as enhancing cooperation in various areas including COVID-19 response, education and people-to-people ties, as well as connectivity. They are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The Special Summit will commemorate 45 years of ASEAN-US relations, and looks to deepen relations and further advance mutually beneficial cooperation, as well as welcome the US’ continued commitment to ASEAN Centrality.

The Special Summit will also build on the successful outcomes of the 9th ASEAN-US Summit convened during the Sultanate’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2021.

ASEAN-US Dialogue Relations commenced in 1977, and subsequently the relationship between ASEAN and the US was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2015.
