His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday attended Jenazah prayer for Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal who passed away early yesterday.
The prayer was held at Sultan Sharif Ali Mosque in Kampong Sengkurong. Also in attendance was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The prayer was led by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned.
Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid, 84, has held several high ranking positions in the government including being a former Chief Syar’ie Judge and former member of the Legislative Council.
He began serving in the government in 1966 as an Information and Tabligh superintendant.
He was also a member of the Privy Council, Brunei Islamic Religious Council, served as the religious education regulator, deputy chief Qadi, and senior religious officer.
He was appointed chief Qadi and a Public Service Commission member. – Azlan Othman
