His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam underscored the importance of preserving traditional values and social customs, despite the rapid pace of modernisation and globalisation.
Delivering a titah at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at the International Convention Centre in Berakas on Saturday, His Majesty highlighted that while the current way of life continues to shape lifestyles and attitudes, the nation must remain steadfast in upholding long-standing social traditions that have been passed down through generations.
“These traditions must not be allowed to disappear in the face of modern currents,” said His Majesty, adding that values such as mutual respect, love, tolerance and cooperation must be preserved and never allowed to diminish.
Acknowledging the impact of globalisation on socio-economic development, His Majesty emphasised the need for community leaders at all levels to adopt proactive and effective measures that align with the evolving times.
“Our approaches must be practical and suited to current trends,” said the monarch, while expressing his aspiration to see these efforts expanded through organised and impactful programmes to help realise the goals outlined in Brunei Vision 2035.

His Majesty also expressed gratitude to Allah the Almighty for the blessings that enabled Muslims in the country to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with joy and thankfulness.
The monarch reminded that the celebration should be carried out in accordance with Islamic teachings, serving as an opportunity to strengthen unity and silaturrahim, beginning with family, neighbours, friends and extending to the wider community.
This spirit of togetherness, His Majesty said, is essential to nurturing mutual respect and cooperation among the populace.
Citing the example of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), His Majesty shared how the Prophet would walk to the mosque for the Sunnat Aidilfitri prayer and return via a different route – a gesture that enabled him to greet more people and foster stronger communal ties.
His Majesty also welcomed the theme of this year’s Hari Raya celebration, “Community Unity in Achieving National Aspirations,” organised by Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, saying that unity plays a crucial role in ensuring national peace, harmony and successful development.
The monarch further expressed appreciation for the participation of various community groups in the event, acknowledging their contributions to national and societal progress.
“Their efforts and initiatives in empowering the community are deeply appreciated,” said His Majesty. – Lyna Mohammad
