Twenty-five-year-old Awangku Ajmal Adib bin Pengiran Ismail and 27-year-old Siti Norhamisah binti Mahli were each ordered to settle BND25,200 in fines by the Magistrate’s Court on Monday for possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid imposed 13 months’ jail in default of payment on both defendants.
The customs prosecutor revealed that the duo were caught carrying 33 cartons and two packets of various brands of cigarettes in a vehicle on arrival at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post.
The contraband was unearthed by customs officers on July 18.
The court also ordered for the cigarettes to be destroyed. – Fadley Faisal
