The Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday ordered a 56-year-old Indonesian man to settle a BND70,600 fine for the possession of smuggled cigarettes.
Islam, who goes by one name, would have to serve 16 months’ jail in default of payment.
He was arrested by Customs preventive officers who raided a house at Jalan Singa Menteri, Kuala Belait on the evening of May 25.
The Customs prosecutor revealed in court that the officers detained the man after discovering 90 cartons, seven packets and five sticks of undeclared cigarettes in his possession, along with BND2,054 and IDR2,492.
Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid ordered the cigarettes destroyed and BND1,094 cash confirmed to be proceeds of sales from the cigarettes, forfeited to the state.
