Hafizullah bin Awang Othman emerged champion in the Kikik Berpulut Kebangsaan Competition held at the open field of the Sungai Teraban Primary School on Sunday.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Laws, International and Research) at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Haji Ahmad Nizam bin Dato Paduka Haji Ismail, the guest of honour, was welcomed by the competition‘s Chairman Zaini bin Haji Kaderi, who is also the Acting Village Head of Kampong Sungai Teraban.
A total of 128 individuals from across the Sultanate joined the competition aimed to preserve the culture and heritage of flying kikiks, according to the competition chairman.
“The competition is one of the many opportunities to introduce the younger generation to the traditional game of berpulut kikik so that it can be passed down for generations to come,” said Zaini. He added the competition also served to establish closer relations among the participants, who share the same passion for the traditional game.
There were two categories in the competition – the berpulut kikik category where the 128 contestants competed in four groups in a single elimination to proceed to the finals of the competition.
The other category was for the most beautifully designed kikik which saw selected kikiks showcased for their design and colour choice, with top five selected by the committee members of the competition as well as an additional five selected by the guest of honour.
For the berpulut kikik Category, Hafizullah who flew under the name Hafiz KTK, was able to beat GDM Top 2020 in the finals of the competition, with the latter placed second. Both Kadir MK and Fuyoo JK shared third place at the end of the competition. Meanwhile, Rezan bin Lamat won in the most beautiful kikik category, with Iswandy bin Ismail and Sabli bin Haji Yussof in second and third place.
Also present were Legislative Council member and Penghulu of Mukim Bukit Sawat Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman, as well as Acting Belait District Officer Haji Amirol Hafidzin bin Haji Muhammad and Penghulu of Mukim Belait Haji Abdul Afiq bin Zainuddin.
