Guide sets standards for artificial intelligence

For the responsible and ethical development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and tools, the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), in collaboration with the AI Governance and Ethics Working Group successfully developed the ‘Guide on Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics for Brunei Darussalam’.

According to AITI, a Public Consultation Paper (PCP) was released on July 2024, whereby feedback from representatives from government, industry, academia, technology communities and the public were considered in the final development of the guide.

The guide highlighted a principles-based approach to harness accountable practices for AI systems and tools such as ‘transparency and explainability’, ‘data protection and data governance’, ‘security and safety’, ‘robustness and reliability’, ‘fairness and equity’, ‘human centricity’ and ‘accountability and integrity’. It provided a baseline set of considerations and guidance on the practices and safeguards to be considered by organisations that design, develop, deploy and/or use AI technologies in Brunei Darussalam.

With the development of this guide, it is hoped to spur innovation as well as encourage ethical and responsible use of AI.

The principles within the guide aligned with regional standards such as the ‘ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics’, providing opportunities to enable responsible interoperability of AI systems regionally, as well as enhancing the credibility of organisations and improving consumer confidence on the use of AI systems and tools. The development of the guide shows continued progress in creating a safe and secure digital environment as we move towards the journey of a smart nation.
