I was dining at a restaurant yesterday when I noticed that all the dishes were served with single-use plastic plates and cutlery.
During a conversation with the owner, he said it was his solution to the lack of staff to run the business, as foreign workers have been returning to their home countries in droves.
What concerns me is the shift to single-use plastic to weather the staff shortage storm. What if all restaurants facing the same issue employed the same solution? Would it lead to an increase in plastic pollution in the country?
Since the introduction of reusable grocery bags, we have been more aware of our carbon footprints. To think that all these efforts may amount to nothing fills me with dread. There has to be a better way to tackle worker shortages in the country without sacrificing our green initiatives.
