Green guilt shouldn’t come with a price tag

The Opinion letter on ‘Free plastic bags: A cause for concern’ published in the Bulletin on April 2 bagged my attention.

I wholeheartedly agree that unchecked distribution of plastic bags is a blight on our streets, our seas, and – frankly – our storage cabinets, where they seem to multiply when we’re not looking.

That said, there’s a wrinkle in the plan to phase them out. While replacing plastic bags with paper or biodegradable alternatives sounds lovely in theory, in practice these ‘climate-saving’ options often come with a price tag rivalling that of a decent sandwich. Suddenly, the noble act of environmental responsibility starts to feel like an expensive hobby.

Let’s not turn saving the planet into something that feels like being charged extra for sambal at a nasi katok stall.

Perhaps businesses can meet us halfway- offer small incentives for bringing our own bags or, at the very least, stop wrapping every single bottle of soy sauce in its own plastic cocoon.

So yes, let’s say no to plastic. But let’s also say no to guilt-charging customers who are just trying to carry their groceries home – without becoming unwilling shareholders in a bag company.
