Government considers new cemetery sites to meet growing demand

The government is prioritising the search for new cemetery sites to accommodate the needs of the growing population.

According to a statement, efforts to secure new burial grounds have been ongoing, but proposals to establish them in high-density areas, including national housing schemes, are being considered as a practical approach.

New cemeteries are typically opened once existing sites reach full capacity.

However, challenges remain, particularly in areas like Pulaie, where discussions are underway to identify a replacement site for the current cemetery, which is expected to close.

A similar situation is seen in other locations, such as Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah where burial grounds have reached maximum capacity.

As a result, cemetery planning is not solely the responsibility of the ministry but also requires public awareness and cooperation in addressing the issue.

STRONG RESPONSE TO BRUHAJ PROMPTS CONSIDERATION FOR EXPANSION

The Bruhaj service has received a positive response from both the Legislative Council (LegCo) members and the public, with over 6,000 registrations since its introduction.

Of these, approximately 700 to 800 individuals have signed up, including nearly 200 minors, some of whom are under five years old and were registered by their parents. A proposal has been made to expand the service to ensure more people can benefit. Several suggestions are being reviewed to assess their feasibility. In light of rapid technological advancements, the government underscores the importance of adapting to these changes to ensure that the public remains well-integrated into the digital age.
