Gotta sleep ‘em all!

The Pokémon universe has long been a part of our waking lives – from catching ‘em all in Pokémon GO to battling gym leaders on various consoles. But what if Pikachu and friends could also be a part of your dream world?

Introducing Pokémon Sleep, a unique mobile game that takes “catching them all” to a new, snooze-filled dimension. It’s not your typical Pokémon adventure, but rather a sleep-tracking app disguised as a charming game.

Who would’ve thought that catching Zs could be as fun as catching Pikachu?

SLEEPING TO SUCCESS

Pokémon Sleep takes the idea of gamifying fitness and well-being and tucks it neatly under your pillow – well, figuratively speaking.

Don’t put your phone under your pillow literally. Anyway, the game revolves around monitoring your sleep patterns and rewarding you with Pokémon for getting a good night’s rest.

The more you sleep – and the better quality of sleep you get – the more Pokémon you attract. It’s a playful take on sleep hygiene if you will, and honestly, it’s a refreshing change from the usual step-counting apps we’ve seen over the years.

I’ve used the app for almost two months now and it has its perks.

The game categorises your sleep into three types: Dozing, Snoozing and Slumbering.

Depending on how well you hit those sweet REM cycles, you’ll encounter different Pokémon in the morning, each with unique sleep styles that align with how you slept. Who knew a drowsy Snorlax could be your perfect night-time companion?

GAMEPLAY – IF YOU CAN CALL IT THAT

Let’s be honest – Pokémon Sleep doesn’t offer traditional gameplay. Instead, you place your phone on your bed, drift off to sleep, and let the app handle the rest. There are no battles, puzzles, or electrifying Pikachu moments.

Yet, there’s a certain charm in waking up to discover which Pokémon you’ve “caught” overnight.

Each morning feels like a mini birthday, but instead of gifts, you’re greeted by a Jigglypuff intrigued by your sleep habits.

The app’s simplicity is its strength. It’s not about high scores or battling – it’s about winding down and appreciating the often-overlooked act of sleep. And in a world that’s constantly go-go-go, this little Pokémon nugget reminds you to slow down and rest.

Similar to Pokémon GO, the app features seasonal surprises with special Pokémon making appearances throughout the year.

I’ve been fortunate enough to encounter a majestic Suicune and a Shiny Psyduck, but as a cat enthusiast, nothing beats seeing Floragato and Sprigatito snuggle by my side. They add a delightful feline touch to my nightly routine.

In keeping with its predecessors, Pokémon Sleep presents a new region with diverse islands, each with its own unique flair. Every week, you can select an island – once unlocked – to nurture your Snorlax. If you crave a change, the E-Zzz Travel Ticket lets you explore different locales with ease.

Each island’s distinct look and focus on specific Pokémon types offer a refreshing variety to your Pokémon-snoozing escapades, making every night a new adventure.

A NOD TO NOSTALGIA

One of the most delightful aspects of Pokémon Sleep is the nostalgia it stirs up, reminiscent of childhood days spent caring for a Tamagotchi. There’s something oddly satisfying about feeding your Snorlax and Pokémon companions breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as if you’re nurturing your very own virtual pets again.

Plus, every meal they enjoy boosts your Drowsy power, making the entire experience feel like a charming blend of retro fun and modern gaming.

Moreover, for anyone who grew up with Pokémon, the idea of having these familiar creatures watch over you while you sleep is oddly comforting. The app’s visuals are whimsical and soft, with soothing lullabies playing in the background if you choose to have the sound on, making it easier to nod off.

It’s like the Pokémon Centre’s music meets white noise. You’ll even encounter Pokémon in adorable sleeping poses, which honestly could melt the coldest of hearts.

And let’s not forget Snorlax – the true star of Pokémon Sleep. This snoozy giant is your constant companion, growing bigger the better you sleep. The more quality rest you get, the more food you can collect to make Snorlax even larger.

If nothing else, it’s a cute incentive to hit the sack a little earlier, and as a mom, this app really helps to get my children into bed. “We need to let the Pokémon have enough sleep! If we sleep late, they’ll be tired in the morning,” I’d say to my girls.

DOES IT WORK?

As a sleep-tracking tool, Pokémon Sleep does its job well enough for me. It provides a basic breakdown of sleep stages and the overall quality of your rest. However, it’s not as advanced as some dedicated sleep apps out there.

But then again, are you really downloading this for in-depth analytics? Probably not.

The joy of Pokémon Sleep lies in its fun, relaxed approach to improving your nightly routine – without taking itself too seriously.

I, however, have a few friends who have opted to remove the app from their phones because they said it gives them anxiety when the Pokémon do not get enough sleep.

A FUN WAY TO HIT THE HAY

The app may not be the most ground-breaking game in the series, but it’s certainly a delightful addition to the Pokémon family.

It’s quirky, wholesome, and just the right amount of silly – perfect for anyone who loves Pokémon and could use a little motivation to improve their sleep. If you’ve ever wanted to wake up to Bulbasaur in your bedroom (minus the actual plant smell), this game’s for you.

So, plug in your phone, set your bedtime, and drift off with Pokémon Sleep – because even Pokémon trainers need their rest. – Izah Azahari
