Muhammad Saiful Dafi bin Muhammad Suhaimi @ Suanddy bin Suhaimi; Hajah Noraini binti Abdullah @ Kantat anak Sagai; Haji Mohammad Nabil Hakim bin Muhammad Nabil Hafizuddin @ Alexon anak Ampeling and Siti Nur Syahirah binti Muhd Asnawi @ Bong Yick Hwan @ Vanessa Anne Bong emerged as the male and female champions of the Murattal Al-Quran and Memorisation of Al-Quran Verses and its Understanding competition for new converts at national level at the Conference Hall of the Islamic Da’wah Centre (PDI) yesterday.
Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman was the guest of honour.
Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan was also present.
The first runners-up in the Murattal Al-Quran category was Abdul Hadi Nasrullah bin Muhammad Ashraf @ Eddy Asrul bin Asut and Siti Nur Afiqah binti Muhammad Asnawi @ Bong Yick Mei; while the second runners-up were Muhammd Nur Aisamuddin bin Muhammad Hanafi @ Dines Anak Uset and Nurhazimah binti Abdullah Luas @ Nurhazimah binti Luas.
Meanwhile, for the Memorisation of Al-Quran Verses and its Understanding category, Muhammad Dzulkarnain Hamzah bin Abdullah Tingub @ Sumardy anak Tingub and Nur Iffah Syazwanah binti Abdul Rahman came in second, while Muhd Irfan Hamizan bin Abdul Rahim @ Arilwatan anak Tawan and Nur Raihana binti Muhammad Hanafi @ Nurahiza anak Uset in third place.
Deputy Chairman of the Judges panel Badaruddin bin Haji Basar announced the results.
Sixteen participants – four males and four females competed in the Murattal Al-Quran category, and four males and four females took part in the Memorisation of Al-Quran Verses and its Understanding category. The participants comprised champions from the four districts.
The competition was organised by Muallaf Development Division (Tarbiyah Muallaf), PDI.
Winners in the Murattal Al-Quran category each bagged a trophy contributed by the minister; BND1,000 cash prize, Tekad Haji Account worth BND500 contributed by Perbadanan Tabung Amanah Islam Brunei (Perbadanan TAIB) and certificates of appreciation.
The first runner-up in the category received a trophy; BND700 cash prize and certificates of appreciation. The second runner-up received a trophy, BND500 cash prize and certificates of appreciation. Consolation prize recipients bagged BND300 cash prize and certificates.
For the Memorisation of Al-Quran Verses and its Understanding, winners received a trophy contributed by the deputy minister; BND1,000 cash prize, Tekad Haji account worth BND500 contributed by Perbadanan TAIB and certificates of appreciation.
Second place winners received a trophy, BND700 cash prize, and certificates of appreciation; while third place winners received a trophy, BND500 cash prize and certificates.
Consolation prize recipients received BND300 cash prize and certificates.
In the Murattal Al-Quran category, the male participants read Surah Al-Mu’minun and Surah An-Nur, while the female participants read Surah Al-Isra’ and Surah Yunus.
For the Memorisation of Al-Quran Verses and its Understanding category, male participants read Surah Adh-Dhuha, Surah At-Tin, Surah Al-‘Adiat and Surah Asy-Syarh while Surah Al-Ma’un, Surah At-Takathur, Surah Az-Zalzalah and Surah Al-Humazah as well as its understanding were read by the female participants.
The competition aims to encourage Muslim converts to read Al-Quran regularly and gain deeper understanding of the recitation. At the same time, it is to uphold His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s call during the special meeting of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) to strengthen dakwah or Islamic eminence in the country.
It is also to showcase the effectiveness of guidance given to the converts through the Muallaf guidance classes and schemes.
