The nation’s youth is a dynamic force when honed, fuels positive change and uplifts communities. Serving as a beacon of patriotic dedication; the Sultanate’s youth are spearheading impactful initiatives addressing societal challenges at the grassroots level.

Mohammad Ashmeer Imtiaz Ahmad was honoured this year with the Excellent Youth Service Award amid the vibrant celebrations of the 18th National Youth Day: the recognition was a testament to the empowerment and potential of the nation’s youth, who have the capacity to embody such undivided passion and dedication.

For Ashmeer, his commitment enabled him to assist communities throughout the Sultanate during a time when the nation was overwhelmed with an unprecedented crisis.

His journey into volunteering began during his school years, Ashmeer told the Bulletin, fuelled by his personal desire to help others rather than always help. This fervour for community service intensified during his academic years at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), where he embraced leadership roles, serving two consecutive terms as the president of the UBD Students’ Representative Council (MPUBD).

Additionally, Ashmeer spearheaded initiatives such as the Youth Town Hall and Youth Forum Brunei.

These initiatives provided a platform for aspiring youth to engage in high-level discussions with leaders from both the public and private sectors. He also played the role of mentor and team member in the Young Professionals Network (YPN).

However, it was during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic that Ashmeer shone. When the nation called for assistance in pandemic initiatives, he stepped up to the forefront without hesitation.

His guiding motivation – “If not me or us, the youth, then who?” – would lead to him heading a team at food ration distribution centres, ensuring essential supplies reached the needy and underprivileged.

“From this point on, the scope of my volunteering had expanded to a national level.”

Balancing his roles at the Department of Community Development (JAPEM) and as the head of volunteers for food distribution centres in various districts showcased Ashmeer’s organisational skills.

Even in the face of challenges and uncertainties, he strictly adhered to safety protocols to protect himself and his family. Throughout his volunteer work during the pandemic, Ashmeer admitted to facing bitter challenges, particularly in terms of protecting himself against the disease.

He diligently followed the standard operating procedures outlined by the Ministry of Health, driven mostly by concern for the well-being of his family members at home.

“To be honest, at that time, I was not personally feared of getting infected, however, the fear stemmed from the possibility of my family members at home getting affected because of my work scope.”

Reflecting on his experiences, Ashmeer found it difficult to put into words the sense of pride derived from serving the country.

He acknowledged that this feeling was deeply personal and couldn’t be fully expressed. He encouraged more youth to step forward and unite to aid the underserved and underprivileged.

The 2023 Excellent Youth Service Award bestowed upon Ashmeer speaks to his unwavering dedication.

This symbol of trust propels him to continue serving his monarch, community, and nation with increased determination.

Ashmeer aspires to be a role model for fellow youth, emphasising that sincerity, consistency, and genuine intention are key to exceeding expectations. His advice resonates: Let sincerity guide actions, give one’s best effort, and maintain unwavering consistency. With these values, Ashmeer envisions a brighter future for Brunei. United by the goal of Brunei Vision 2035, the nation’s youth are poised to create a legacy of positive change, following the example set by Mohammad Ashmeer Imtiaaz Ahmad – with his service, dedication, and boundless inspiration. – Rokiah Mahmud
