Friday sermon highlights importance of mental health in Islam

The Friday sermon delivered today emphasised the significance of mental health from an Islamic perspective, highlighting the importance of maintaining both physical and emotional well-being.

The sermon reminded the congregation that Islam is a religion of mercy that provides guidance for all aspects of life, including taking care of one’s mental and physical health. It stressed the need for awareness regarding mental health issues and the importance of early intervention for those experiencing psychological distress.

Mental health, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is not merely the absence of illness but a state of overall well-being, including physical, mental, and social health. The sermon elaborated that a person with good mental health exhibits positive traits such as patience, resilience, and the ability to handle stress wisely. In contrast, mental health issues can lead to emotional instability, anxiety, and behavioral changes, which may negatively impact individuals, families, and society as a whole.

The sermon also addressed various factors contributing to mental health problems, such as financial difficulties, family conflicts, workplace stress, substance abuse, and social isolation. It urged the community to provide support to those in distress and to seek guidance from trusted individuals, including family members, counselors, and professionals.

Islam encourages a holistic approach to maintaining good health, including consuming nutritious food, getting adequate rest, exercising, and fostering a positive mindset. The sermon highlighted that maintaining a strong spiritual connection with Allah the Almighty through prayer, reading the Al-Quran, and engaging in acts of charity can bring inner peace and mental stability.

The sermon concluded with a reminder to adopt a healthy lifestyle, manage stress effectively, and avoid harmful activities. It encouraged the congregation to always seek Allah’s the Almighty’s guidance and protection for a life filled with good health and well-being. – Hakim Hayat
