Stress in the workplace is caused by various factors including an unpleasant atmosphere, excessive workload, conflicts and disagreements between employers and colleagues, lack of incentives and appreciation, and leaders who are unwilling to address problems, Imams highlighted in the Friday sermon.
They explained that numerous negative effects can occur when a person cannot control stress at work. These effects include hot temper, depression, fear, loss of concentration, restlessness, lethargy, and persistent feelings of guilt.
In extreme cases, individuals may resort to harmful measures such as self-injury or even suicide.
For Muslims, committing suicide is a major sin, resulting in eternal damnation.
Imams added that there are many methods to deal with work pressure based on Islamic teachings.
These include getting closer to Allah by performing the five daily prayers and additional supererogatory prayers, remembering Allah, saying Alhamdulillah, praising Him, reading the Quran and contemplating its interpretation, and praying.
Additionally, Imams noted practical steps to manage work pressure include staying positive, striving to do one’s best, planning work and time wisely, addressing problems with rational and systematic solutions, being open, tolerant, and realistic about changes at work, practising effective communication, expressing opinions politely and clearly, respecting colleagues’ views, increasing social support at work, and adopting a healthy lifestyle based on Islamic values and teachings. – Azlan Othman
