The Friday sermon today highlighted the importance of cleanliness in Islam, emphasising its significance in both physical and spiritual aspects of life. Islam is a comprehensive way of life that encompasses every aspect of human existence, including the principle of cleanliness.

The sermon underscored that cleanliness in Islam is not merely a cultural practice or a mark of progress but a reflection of faith and spiritual purity. This is affirmed in the Quran, as stated in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 222, where the Almighty expresses His love for those who purify themselves.

Recognising the vital role of cleanliness, Islam places great emphasis on maintaining both physical and spiritual hygiene.

Cleanliness is a prerequisite before undertaking any task, especially acts of worship. Before performing prayers, Muslims are required to perform ablution (wudu), ensuring that their bodies, clothing, and prayer spaces are clean and pure.

Every virtuous act, whether physical or spiritual, is beloved to Allah subhanahu wa-ta’ala. Thus, upholding cleanliness in all aspects – personal, familial, societal, environmental, and national – is crucial.

The sermon highlighted that maintaining cleanliness fosters a comfortable, peaceful, and healthy atmosphere while preventing illnesses and promoting physical and mental well-being.

However, it was noted that some individuals still neglect cleanliness, whether in personal hygiene or maintaining the cleanliness of their surroundings. Acts such as littering in inappropriate places were condemned as irresponsible and disrespectful.

Furthermore, neglecting cleanliness can lead to the spread of diseases, environmental pollution, food contamination, and an overall decline in public health. Islam firmly upholds that cleanliness is a collective responsibility that every Muslim must observe.

Beyond physical cleanliness, the sermon stressed the importance of spiritual purity. Devotion to the Almighty entails purging oneself from sinful behaviour and harmful influences. A spiritually pure heart fosters good character and moral excellence, shaping individuals into righteous and honourable members of society.

Muslims are encouraged to consistently pray for steadfastness in maintaining both physical and spiritual cleanliness.

As cleanliness is highly regarded in Islam, the sermon reiterated that it extends to all aspects of life, including maintaining the cleanliness of homes, families, clothing, food, and inner hearts and minds.

Islam’s teachings on cleanliness are not only about health but also about attaining spiritual reward. Upholding cleanliness earns divine blessings and validates acts of worship, while negligence may result in sin, divine displeasure, and the rejection of worship.

Therefore, the command to uphold cleanliness serves both personal and societal well-being. Those who observe it gain rewards, while those who disregard it may face consequences in this life and the hereafter.

The sermon concluded with a call to action for all Muslims to adopt cleanliness as a way of life. Every individual is responsible for maintaining cleanliness in all areas, including homes, mosques, government and private buildings, public restrooms, parks, and other shared spaces.

By fostering cleanliness, society can enjoy a healthier, more harmonious, and spiritually fulfilling life. – Izah Azahari
