Something I always enjoy during the fasting month, is visiting all the Ramadhan stalls in the Sultanate. We are able to purchase traditional delicacies and food from the region, while also seeing large crowds mingling. It gives a carnival atmosphere, adding to the festivities. Sometimes, we are even offered free food items, when we purchase many delicacies.
However, it is quite concerning to see the number of plastic bags offered by the food vendors. If a customer purchased five items, five plastic bags were offered, one for each item.
Imagine if there were 100 customers who purchased 100 different items. Then 100 plastic bags would have been offered.
The sad part is when we all are trying to control the use of plastic bags, we without giving much thought, take away all these plastic bags, which might end up in our garbage bins.
I think, we as customers should simply say no to plastic bags and carry with us a recyclable bag. This way we save the environment and also reject plastic bags.
The offering of plastic bags is very common at kedai runcit too. Here too if you purchase five different items you are offered five plastic bags. When I inquired from a sales person at a kedai runcit, he said customers insist on separate bags for each item. Perhaps we should replace the plastic bags with paper bags which are biodegradable.
We should all join hands and try to limit the use of plastic bags, which end up in waterways and even in the ocean.
No to Plastic
