A 27-year-old uniformed personnel pleaded guilty to six charges of cheating on Saturday and will potentially be jailed for several years.
Zainal Amiruddin bin Zainal Aliuddin was arrested on May 22 after an investigation was prompted by a series of police reports regarding a scam involving auto parts.
Prosecutor Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid said the defendant had cheated five people into believing that he could supply car parts that they were looking for.
The defendant would go through his victim’s social media platforms and offer to supply the parts, which ranged from mud flaps to an engine.
On believing that the defendant was offering a legitimate service, the victims made payments to a bank account, only to receive no response when following up on their orders.
The defendant was believed to have committed offences on six occasions – once in February and the rest in May, cheating just under BND4,000 from the five victims.
The court adjourned the case to June 1 for the prosecution to submit on sentencing. Each of the six charges carries a penalty of up to seven years’ jail time and a fine.
