An undeterred thief was sentenced to four years’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to another series of thefts.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni said a lengthy custodial sentence is warranted in Md Alipah bin Lamat’s case as he is undeterred by his previous punishments and poses a threat to other people’s private property.
Prosecutor Nurul Husna Abidin revealed in court that the defendant has a long list of previous convictions dating back to 2005, with a recent one in 2022.
This time, the 39-year-old defendant struck a mobile shop in Kampong Kiulap at 2.25pm on February 4 where he swiped off a smart watch on display. He hid it in his pocket and left the shop.
He then went to a furniture shop in a hotel building nearby where he made away with a gaming chair displayed outside the shop.
He walked away with the chair up until Kianggeh where he took a boat ride home.
The defendant managed to sell the chair, but was later recovered by the police.
Staff at the furniture shop realised the chair was missing. CCTV recordings showed footage of the defendant in action.
A police report was immediately filed.
But it was not until February 6, when a staff member at the mobile shop realised the smart watch was missing and alerted the director, who checked the CCTV and came across a footage of the defendant in action.
A police report was filed and led to the defendant’s arrest on February 7.
