Four nabbed for selling fireworks illegally

KOTA TINGGI (THE STAR) – An assortment of illegal firecrackers and fireworks worth RM25,000 were seized in four police raids in Malaysia on Monday.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Superintendent Hussin Zamora said four local men, in their 20s and 50s, were detained during the operations between 8.30pm and 11.30pm.

“The suspects do not have permits to sell the firecrackers and fireworks,’’ he said in a statement, adding that the premises, which were raided, do not have permits from the local authority to sell them.

Superintendent Hussin said the suspects, who do not have criminal records, were being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 (Act 207) for possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances.

A person found guilty under the Act could be jailed for seven years, fined RM10,000 or both.

Superintendent Hussin warned that the police would take stern action against those caught selling firecrackers and fireworks illegally.

“The public who has any information on the illegal sale in the district should inform the police immediately,’’ he said.
