Four jailed for a series of break-ins

Two local men, who committed a series of break-ins and thefts at business premises, were recently sentenced to jail and strokes of the cane.

Two women were also jailed for their roles as accomplices.

Mahuddin bin Muhammad Sopian, 27, received seven years’ jail with six strokes of the cane; Awangku Mohd Redzuan bin Pengiran Haji Ismail, 33, eight years with six strokes of the cane; 35-year-old Norhafilah binti Mohammad Jenin eight months’ jail; and Siti Ahminah binti Saidin, 33, eight months’ jail.

Awangku Mohd Redzuan was found unrepentant as he was released from prison for two theft-related offences in 2021.

Intermediate Court Judge Hajah Hazarena binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Abu Hurairah noted that there was elaborate planning to target business premises and showed no signs of stopping until their arrests.

The judge highlighted the offences were without regard to hardships caused to the businesses and upheld the need for deterrence when handing her sentences.

Judge Hajah Hazarena noted the defendants were in social dilemma but stressed that this was no reason to resort to crimes. – Fadley Faisal
