Forum highlights leadership in post-pandemic era

The pandemic has emphasised the importance of having steady leadership at every organisation to bring objectivity, direction and sustainability in the face of tough challenges and crises said Brunei Institute of Leadership and Islamic Finance (BILIF) Chief Executive Officer Hajah Sufinah binti Haji Sahat.

“I hope that the Leadership Forum would become an avenue for leaders from different organisations to meet, network, as well as share challenges and best practices in the area of leadership,” she said.

She made these remarks during the BILIF-Institute of Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA) Leadership Forum, a collaboration between BILIF and ILIA, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), at the Radisson Hotel on Tuesday.

The hybrid forum, themed ‘Leaders, Leadership, and Uncertainties’, aimed at discussing the roles of leadership in times of uncertainties, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic; explore the experiences of leaders in various sectors; uncover leadership challenges; ways to mitigate risks; and to develop conscious leaders of the future.

Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, in his keynote speech, shared critical lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, including the importance of synergy, collaboration and teamwork to achieve the successful enactment of the Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Nation approach in times of crisis.

The minister also encouraged leaders to be anticipatory rather than reactive, in addition to being compassionate, empathetic, and able to maintain composure to prioritise public interest and navigate the global scale crises successfully.

The forum featured a series of panel discussions and presentations on ‘Leaders, Leadership, and Uncertainties’; ‘Leadership Experience in Academia’; ‘Contrast in Leadership Principles and Practices’; ‘Rethinking Leadership in the Post COVID-19 Era’; ‘Islamic Leadership – Building the Future from Lessons of the Past’; and ‘Ladies in Leadership’.

The event concluded with a remark by ILIA and Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) Director Dr Mahani binti Haji Hamdan.
