A 46-year-old Indonesian was sentenced to eight months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Monday after she pleaded guilty to overstaying for over 3,000 days in the country.
Sunarti was also ordered to settle a BND1,000 fine, or serve an additional month’s jail in default of payment.
Senior Magistrate Azrimah Abdul Rahman heard from immigration prosecutor Adi Yusra Adanan that immigration enforcement officers were conducting inspections and came across the defendant at a stall in Kampong Madewa at 4.15pm on February 11.
Officers demanded to see the defendant’s documents and found that she held an expired immigration pass, leading to her detention.
Investigations revealed that the defendant had been a fugitive since she was given the immigration pass which was valid until March 20, 2014.
It was further unearthed that the defendant got caught up with the authorities on March 9, 2014 when her passport was seized and she was given the immigration pass, requiring her to turn up for investigations regarding an immigration operation by March 12, 2014.
The defendant attended on March 13, 2014, despite not reporting on time, the authorities extended her immigration pass up until March 20, 2014. The defendant had been on the run since up until her arrest.
