A 32-year-old Bangladeshi who was in possession of smuggled cigarettes and liquor was ordered to settle a BND12,056 fine by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner ordered Sohag Sarder to serve a year’s jail in default of payment after he pleaded guilty to possession of 15 cartons and 12 packets of variety brand cigarettes, and a bottle of liquor.
The Customs prosecutor informed court that it was the road traffic police who detained the defendant in his car on the Sungai Akar highway headed towards the Subok roundabout at 9.15pm on February 9.
The court ordered the cigarettes and liquor destroyed.
