Foreigner fined BND32K for possessing contraband

The Magistrate’s Court on Thursday ordered a 35-year-old Bangladeshi to settle a BND32,000 fine for possessing and the sale of contraband.

Mohamed Sohel will have to serve 23 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.

He was arrested by Customs preventive officers during a raid of a house at Kampong Sengkurong at 7.13am on October 24.

Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni further heard from the Customs prosecutor that the officers detained the defendant after discovering 23 cartons and eight packets of undeclared cigarettes, three bottles of liquor and nine cans of beer in his possession, along with BND2,200.

The magistrate ordered the cigarettes and booze destroyed, and cash, confirmed to be proceeds of sales from the contraband, forfeited to the state. – Fadley Faisal
