Food security prioritised over exports: Minister

The government will prioritise food security over exports, said Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin during the 20th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting yesterday.

This was said in response to food security concerns, particularly egg exports, raised by LegCo member Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin

The minister said the government takes a proactive approach, noting if there are shortages of specific products, it will temporarily be halted to address the needs of the local population.

The minister said if any shortages of eggs is identified, the Sultanate would suspend egg exports to meet domestic demand.

He added the ministry conducts a thorough analysis of egg supplies to assess sufficiency for domestic needs every three months.

“If the production exceeds our self-sufficiency, then we will export eggs,” he said. – Rokiah Mahmud
