XINHUA – Myanmar authorities have arrested five suspects for smuggling firearms and ammunition in eastern Myanmar’s Shan state, the Information Team of Myanmar’s State Administration Council reported on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, the authorities intercepted a vehicle in Namsang township of southern Shan state on July 12 and confiscated the firearms and ammunition found inside, the report said.
The seized items included 15 firearms, 43,765 bullets, 450 40-milimetre grenades, and 15 magazines, it said. Investigations revealed that the firearms and ammunition were intended to be transported to Kayah and Kayin states, the report said.
The arrested suspects admitted that they were affiliated with an ethnic armed organisation in Shan state and were transporting these weapons to armed groups in Kayah and Kayin states, the report added.
