Five junior tennis players left the country yesterday to attend a training camp at Paradorn International Tennis Academy, Thailand.
The players are 15-year-old Megan Lee; 14-year-old Areesha Zain; 13-year-old Danielle Lim; 12-year-old Eason Lim; and 10-year-old Joel Elijah Lim.
Megan, Areesha, Danielle and Eason have represented the country internationally in the past in the Billie Jean King Cup Under-14 and International Tennis Federation Asian Under-14 Development Championships. The group of young hopefuls is accompanied by Brunei number one and coach Aiman Abdullah. Lexus and Brunei Tennis Legends joined forces to support the participation of the junior tennis players.
Founded by former ATP number nine ranked singles player Paradorn Srichapan, the training camp provides opportunities for young tennis hopefuls to learn tennis and to develop into world-class athletes.
The camp aims to expose Brunei junior tennis players to more advance on-and-off court trainings from an international perspective, as they train with experienced coaches and international players.
The Brunei Tennis Legends comprise ex-national tennis players who represented Brunei from 1998-2000, including former Brunei number one players Pengiran Aki and Huzaimi Husin.
The likes of Pengiran Sallehudin, Ahmad Husin, Chua Peng Wuei, On Sie Lu, and Nelson Cheong are also part of the Legends.
In harnessing the expertise and passion of former national tennis players, the Legends have been carrying out a youth development programme focusing on the technicalities of the sport, nurturing one’s potential, instilling discipline, and fostering a lifelong love for tennis.
The Legends encourage and support junior players in their training and participation in local and international tournaments. – Fadhil Yunus
