The Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) through the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT) and the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) through the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Finance and Economy recently conducted a joint operation on five business premises in the Brunei-Muara District and found no violation under the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994, the Weights and Measures Act 1983 or the Price Control Act.
SDT officers found 18 weighing machines used for trading purposes, which were all verified, accurate and registered in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act 1983 and Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994.
The business premises inspected by the JPES adhered to the Price Control Act and its regulations where prices were displayed clearly and consistent with the system at the payment counter, and controlled items such as cooking oil and infant formula milk were not sold above the set maximum price.
Three of the business premises inspected are participants of the Brunei Salebration 2023 and were found to be in compliance with the prescribed sales guidelines.
Retailers are reminded to ensure that pre-packed goods sold to consumers are required by the Act to carry a correct and clear indication of the net weight or measure of the product.
Failure to comply with or contravene with any provision of the Act is deemed an offence and liable on conviction to a BND500 fine and three months’ imprisonment. – James Kon
