First Brunei Wushu tournament begins in May

The first Brunei International Wushu Championship organised by the Brunei Darussalam Wushu Federation and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports is set to take place from May 2 to 5 at Pusat Belia.

Wushu athletes from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia are expected to take part in the inaugural competition, with 32 local participation.

“This is the first event after the 10th Asian Youth Wushu Championship in 2019. The competition aims to improve the technical level of Brunei’s Wushu, raise competitive experience and forge cooperative exchanges with participating countries to make common objectives,” said national wushu coach Li Hui.

“We are also preparing for the ninth World Junior Wushu Championships slated in Brunei in September,” he said.

“The competition is divided into age groups according to the rules of the International Wushu Federation. The categories are Group ‘A’ for 15-18 years old, Group ‘B’ for 12-14 years old, Group ‘C’ for for athletes under 11 years old and open category for 18 years old and above. There are 63 events for men and women,” he added.
