Firefighters free child’s toe from escalator

James Kon

Firefighters on Thursday night freed a six-year-old child whose left toe was stuck in an escalator at The Mall, Gadong.

Photos of the incident also went viral on social media.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD), six firefighters and a fire engine from Beribi Fire Station led by Acting DSO Md Rafie rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 8.25pm. The child’s foot was released using spreader tools within two minutes.

The victim was brought to the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital for further treatment.

The FRD urged the public to pay attention to warning signs on escalators such as not to place their foot on the yellow lines, and avoid wearing long skirts and soft rubber shoes as they can get stuck and be dragged by moving escalators.
