    Festive rush begins

Local Chinese community members were making their late-minute shopping for the Chinese New Year celebration, which is just a few days away.

Local department stores and shops were filled with Chinese New Year decorations and food, especially mandarin oranges for the festivity.

Lim, who was shopping with his family, said, “My leave from work begins today, so I took the time to bring my family to do some shopping for the celebration. We are hoping to buy more snacks and mandarin oranges for our guests.”

He added, “We have seen a wider selection of mandarin oranges this year, especially from China. This is good as it provides customers with more variety and price options.”

This year is the year of the wood snake. In Chinese, the snake is associated with wisdom, knowledge, intelligence, intuition and creativity. Snakes bring good luck, prosperity, fertility and longevity.

Meanwhile, Wong Sui Yen said, “Chinese New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar. It is a time for family reunions. As always, I am preparing a feast for the reunion dinner and need to shop for fresh ingredients today.” – James Kon
